S rostoucím množstvím globálních kulturních modelů se problém jazyka v mezikulturní komunikaci stává stále významnější. Tato bakalařská práce poskytuje přehled některých jazyků a jejich užití rodilými mluvčími, přičemž definuje vliv mateřských jazyků. Práce pojednává také o kultuře a jejich definicích, zatímco popisuje kulturní modely, zejména Lewisův model a Trompenaarsův model. Teorie je následně aplikována na subjekty této práce, a to Anglie a Japonsko.
The process of cultural adaptation of AFS exchange students to the czech culture

The thesis focuses on adaptability of AFS exchange students. It studies their ability to adapt to the Czech culture. In the first part the theoretical background of intercultural psychology, adaptation process and its possible obstacles is presented. It is based on many important authors, especially M. J. Bennett, J. W. Berry, W. Bridges, G. Hofstede, K. Oberg or J. Průcha. In the second part own research of adaptability of AFS students is presented. The data was collected through CCAI surveys. The results are used to compare the adaptability of the students in the beginning and in the end of the exchange programs and also to compare the genders, age groups and nationalities with each other.

Intercultural communication mediated by a PR agency

This diploma thesis aims to describe comprehensive processes of intercultural communication in a Czech PR agency. The agency's mediation activity is seen in a broader context - not only as the one of a mere intermediary supplying translation and interpreting services provided by local third-party subcontractors, but the one of an active element that co-creates and completes the final shape of these products and services. First of all, we are going to introduce our topic in the context of the existing research made in translation studies, media studies and marketing communications theory. The empirical part of this thesis consists of a case study of a selected Czech PR agency. We used qualitative methods in order to gain data enabling to describe communications processes heading from the client, i.e. a foreign company (seen as the author and primary contracting entity), through the agency (the manipulator) to the translator, and then back to the agency and through its mediation to the primary recipients, i.e. Czech mass media. Magical realism in Bohemia and in German speaking countries: A Study to intercultural communication".

In the presented thesis I focused on the translations (specifically between Czech and German) of a particular literary movement, that appeared in the first half of the 20th century - of magic(al) realism. As for the topic and metodological directing of the thesis, it falls within the history of translation. The main aim is to present the original literary production of magical realism in the German speaking countries and in Bohemia and to demonstrate, to what extent the both cultural areas have connected during the existence of magical realism by means of translations. The research is led especially with quantitative respect - I primarily focus on collecting of the originals and their translations (if there are any). By the existing translations I studied mainly the cultural-historical context of their origin and their eventual integration into the literary tradition of the target culture. Finding out the number of existing translations proceeded in form of extensive searches in the national libraries. It shows itself that only ca. one third of the so called magical realist titles was translated from German into Czech so far. From the Czech titles around a half came out in German. Interpreter as intercultural mediator in a Chinese-Czech dialogue

The thesis analyzes the interpreter's role in overcoming the cultural barrier between Czechs and Chinese. It focuses on interaction in business settings. The topic has not yet been sufficiently explored, so the first part aims to give a comprehensive overview of relevant literature. First, the role of the interpreter in liaison interpreting is discussed, followed by a systematic comparison of the Czech and Chinese cultures. The overview covers a whole range of cultural differences that can potentially create a barrier in intercultural communication. The second part is a research in interpreter's strategies of overcoming that barrier. The data is acquired via interviews with experienced interpreters. Having analyzed this data, the thesis concludes with taxonomy of factors, which influence how active a role the interpreter plays in the interaction, and of activities that make up the role of an interpreter as intercultural mediator.
Interpretation of General Characteristics of Czech and Japanese Languages on Literary Texts Examples and their Translations

(in English): This thesis Interpretation of General Characteristics of Czech and Japanese Languages on Literary Texts Examples and their Translations deals with interpretation and comparison of linguistic phenomena between defferent liguistic cultures. The aim of this thesis is to describe the different linguistic phenomena and outline its solution in translation. The first part deals with the description of both languages from typological viewpoint, as well as the basic attitude in the translation. The second part deals with a comparison of selected literary texts with their original and analysis of various of translator's methods. Think about how to overcome the problem points when translating between Czech and Japanese and possibilities of better arrangement of different cultures in the target language.
Use of coaching in hotel chains management

Coaching has become a phenomenon of the 21st century. It is considered to be one of the most effective methods of personal and corporate development and the way of communication. When participating in management style, coaching tends to strengthen responsibility, creativity, motivation and power to overcome internal and external barriers obstructing staff improvement. The aim of the thesis is to analyze the use of coaching in hotel chains management. Borders disappearence, free trade and the internationalization process create favorable conditions and new opportunities for expansion of hotel chains, recruitment of international workforce as well as the arrival of large numbers of both domestic and foreign tourists. The society has discovered the extraordinary potential of multicultural teams, but also realizes the threat caused by their improper leading. Nowadays, the managers and directors are forced to work under increasing pressure. Firms and employees requirements are becoming more and more demanding. On one hand, flexibility, independence, expertise and ability to act effectively in crisis situations are needed. On the other hand, ambitions and aspirations of employees themselves are also getting more obvious. The companies already know that a well-chosen leadership styles lead to the attainment of corporate goals and achieve personal and professional staff developement. During the eight-month work placement in one of the leading Spanish hotel chain Iberostar on the Canary Islands was studied approach and management styles on different levels of the organizational structure. Based on observations, structured interviews and the actual involvement in the managerial team work, the study serving as a basis for a final proposal for the application of coaching in this particular chain has been created. Considering the international work environment and multicultural teams, so typical just for tourism industry, the issue of cross-cultural management is also discussed. The previous coaching and intercultural communication studies at Johannes Kepler University in Linz have become the theoretical basis in this area.
Intercultural communication in international relations: Models of intercultural learning and proposition of the research of their effects

With the expanding globalization importance of intercultural communication is increasing. The task of intercultural learning is improvement of this communication. Participation on exchange programs abroad is also one form of intercultural learning. These sojourns are considered very beneficial, but their effects are rarely measured. Main aim of this thesis is to propose a research, which could find out to which extent are exchange programs successful in fulfilling their goals, especially in area of transition from ethnocentric stages to ethnorelative stages.
